The Church plays a vital role in transforming lives in the developing world. In many of the poorest communities, it is the Church that cares for the sick and dying, looks after orphaned children, feeds the starving and educates the illiterate. It is common to see food gardens in the Church yard, with a clinic or school in the Church hall, all operating alongside regular worship, study and prayer.
Around the world, Church buildings have provided safety in times of conflict, and Church leaders have often helped to break down barriers, facilitate peace and broker reconciliation.
International development experts agree. There is a widespread recognition that Church ministers and leaders are often the first port of call for government and development agencies wanting to implement development programmes. They are deeply rooted in their communities and they understand the needs and challenges facing local people.
Yet, Church leaders are often ill equipped to serve the spiritual and practical needs of these communities. They may lack education themselves and some pastors cannot read and write. They may be geographically isolated or have no funds to contribute towards development efforts.
Books for Life supports emerging Church leaders by supporting theological education and other Church education and communications projects worldwide. We equip theological colleges and libraries with relevant literature that helps Church leaders integrate their understanding of their faith with an ability to respond to their communities’ specific needs.
