In developing countries, many Christian tertiary education institutions struggle to stock their libraries with relevant theological texts. This may be due to a lack of funds, or simply because theological books are not written or published locally and are hard to come by. The OBS helps to provide a solution to this problem by recycling good quality, relevant theological books and distributing them to colleges free of charge.
The OBS benefits a range of institutions. These include colleges offering undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in theology and religious studies, seminaries preparing students for ordination, and denominational centres providing continuing professional development for ministers and lay Church leaders. The OBS is an ecumenical scheme and we support Christian institutions across the denominational spectrum.
Books are donated, mostly by individuals and churches in the UK, and are housed centrally at the Bradford office of Feed the Minds. Each book is listed in the OBS catalogue*, which is published twice a year. Member libraries and colleges can request a choice of 40 books from each catalogue and they will receive up to 25 of these.
The majority of books are published in English, although we also welcome books in languages relevant to the developing world and Eastern Europe. The OBS usually stocks about 9,000 titles at any time.
The OBS supports around 300 colleges every year, most of which are located in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
